Appelbaum, Rusbridger, Schmid, Campbell @ LIBE Committee Inquiry on Electronic Mass Surveillance of EU Citizens

In Appelbaum, Archive, GCHQ, LIBE, NSA on September 7, 2013 at 3:28 AM

In its resolution of 4 July 2013 the European Parliament set the mandate of the LIBE Committee Inquiry:

Instructs its Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the matter in collaboration with national parliaments and the EU-US expert group set up by the Commission and to report back by the end of the year, by:

  • gathering all relevant information and evidence from both US and EU sources (fact-finding)
  • investigating the alleged surveillance activities of US authorities as well as any carried out by certain Member States (mapping of responsibilities)
  • assessing the impact of surveillance programmes as regards: the fundamental rights of EU citizens (in particular the right to respect for private life and communications, freedom of expression, the presumption of innocence and the right to an effective remedy); actual data protection both within the EU and for EU citizens outside the EU, focusing in particular on the effectiveness of EU law in respect of extraterritoriality mechanisms; the safety of the EU in the era of cloud computing; the added value and proportionality of such programmes with regard to the fight against terrorism; the external dimension of the area of freedom, security and justice (assessing the validity of adequacy decisions for EU transfers to third countries, such as those carried out under the Safe Harbour Agreement, international agreements and other legal instruments providing for legal assistance and cooperation) (damage and risk analysis)
  • exploring the most appropriate mechanisms for redress in the event of confirmed violations (administrative and judicial redress and compensation schemes)
  • putting forward recommendations aimed at preventing further violations, and ensuring credible, high-level protection of EU citizens’ personal data via adequate means, in particular the adoption of a fully-fledged data protection package (policy recommendations and lawmaking)
  • issuing recommendations aimed at strengthening IT security in the EU’s institutions, bodies and agencies by means of proper internal security rules for communication systems, in order to prevent and remedy unauthorised access and the disclosure or loss of information and personal data (remedying of security breaches)

So far the actors who seem to be best able to provide the Committee with adequate information, besides the US and EU Authorities which will be invited later, are the media which unveiled these facts and the participants of the EU-US expert groups.

Their testimony and intervention before the LIBE Committee will enable the LIBE Committee to identify those aspects that will deserve closer investigation and thus need clarification in the following meetings.

Given the obvious similarities with the investigation into the Echelon system the then Chair of the temporary committee, Mr Coelho, and its rapporteur, Mr Schmid, have been invited to share their experiences.

Introductory remarks by Juan Fernando LÓPEZ AGUILAR, Chair of the LIBE Committee

Statements by:

  • Jacques FOLLOROU, Le Monde
  • Jacob APPELBAUM, investigative journalist, software developer and computer security researcher with the Tor Project

SANDY HOOK – The Documentary (2013)

In News, Newtown: Sandy Hook School Mass Shooting, OpExpose, USA, USA, Viral Videos, World Revolution on January 29, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Mark Howitt takes an investigative look into the events and controversy surrounding the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting which happened on December 14th 2012 in Newtown Connecticut. This documentary explores several aspects and claims of details surrounding the event and is an attempt to shed some light and provide logical answers to the many questions that remain as to what happened in Newtown. Using rare news and article clips, testimonies, police audio analysis and several perspectives, it is quite clear that we are not being told the truth about what really happened. Was there others involved in the crime? Why have authorities and media provided abundant amounts of misleading information, changing the official narrative on countless occasions? These questions are being asked by a large amount of people in the public and the case is looked at in great detail to try and make sense of things and bring closure to much of the controversy in what is perhaps the biggest conspiracy since JFK.

Topics discussed include identities of multiple suspects, police audio analysis, witness testimonies, media coverage, the Lanza family, gun ban issue, intelligence agencies, examples of covert operations, project longevity, project mockingbird, fast and furious, crisis actor claims, prior drills, living victims, FEMA, advanced knowledge of attack, motive of crime, and several other aspects and anomalies.

CNN Video of Police Charge at Sandy Hook Is Not Sandy Hook

In News, Newtown: Sandy Hook School Mass Shooting, OpExpose, Other Leaks, USA, Viral Videos on January 27, 2013 at 6:14 PM

At the words “they arrived to carnage,” the CNN Anderson Cooper report cuts to helicopter footage of seven police officers charging across a parking lot and toward a school. It is breaking news coverage of the Sandy Hook shooting just hours earlier.

The three-minute report posted on the day of the shootings at the official CNN website is entitled “Tragedy Strikes at Elementary School.” But the school the police are seen ‘arriving’ to is almost certainly not Sandy Hook. It is St. Rose of Lima School, a private school a few miles away, also in Newtown. Two adults were wounded, Natalie Hammond and another whom police have not named.

The helicopter footage is broadcast at 8 seconds into the CNN report, and again at time stamp 1:02. A close examination of the landscaping, parking lot markings, and the distinct curvature of the sidewalk reveals that no such terrain exists at Sandy Hook Elementary School. However, a Google Earth satellite photo shows the true location almost beyond a reasonable doubt. After circulating across the Internet for a time, photographic evidence seems to bear out that doubts were founded.

It is not known whether the rush to the building of the seven officers seen in the clip is a drill. Also unknown is when it took place.

The GPS coordinates of the area of the St. Rose of Lima School in question are: latitude 41.415154, longitude -73.297764. The street address which can be entered into the Google Earth search box to find the location is 40 Church Hill Rd, Newtown, CT. Google Earth is an Internet tool which allows Internet users to view satellite photos of any place on the planet in minute detail. Users can instantaneously zoom in on details as small as cars or streetlights.

In the disputed CNN footage, at time stamp :08 seconds, police can be seen running around a curved landscape feature from which diagonal lines radiate on the parking lot asphalt. At 1:02 (one minute and 2 seconds) the same clip is played again, more extensively. Officers run onto a long, curving white sidewalk next to a building. A utility room of some sort can be seen on the roof, near a metallic, grill-like device, perhaps a solar collector.

An examination of a satellite photo of Sandy Hook shows no such grouping of features. An examination of the satellite photo of St. Rose of Lima School, however, shows the exact features in detail. It is nearly indisputable that the the site where the officers are shown running is St. Rose of Lima School, not Sandy Hook.

In the CNN report, the second appearance of the footage takes place in the context of a cut to Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police at a press conference on that day. The script runs as follows:

Vance (at press conference): “Off-duty troopers responded to the school, and with Newtown police immediately upon arrival, entered the school and began a complete active shooter search of the building.”

As the report cuts to the charging officers, the CNN voice-over says:

“They arrived to carnage.”

The clip was run on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.” The theme of Cooper’s 360 program is “Keeping them honest.”

[UPDATE: News footage is generally accompanied with time-stamp information. One reporter told me "It makes it easy to find things."] – RL

MSM Lies: It’s Still Unconfirmed Whether Guns Used in Sandy Hook Shooting Were Registered to Nancy Lanza

In Gun Control, News, Newtown: Sandy Hook School Mass Shooting, OpExpose, Other Leaks, USA on January 27, 2013 at 5:21 PM

According to CT State law, gun registration information is not to be disclosed. Apparently we will never have proof of who those guns belonged to. But that won’t stop the media from telling us that those guns were Nancy Lanza’s. And then why is Lt. Vance ance telling us they’re gonna trace these guns and find out everything about them? He forgot to tell us that we’ll never be seeing any of that information. And we’re supposed to trust the people (local and federal officials) who have already been shown to be proven liars over their “Henry repeating rifle and Enfield” “mispeaks”? Or the people (local and federal officials) who can’t tell the difference between 4 and 2? (handguns found on Adam Lanza)

Vance actually told us at a press conference that there’s only one guy investigating the guns’ history, so we have to trust that guy, who is one of these mysterious untrustworthy local or federal officials.
