Egypt – Million People March

In Egypt, WikiLeaks, World Revolution on February 1, 2011 at 7:01 AM

Egypt, 1 st February 2011.

After seven days of demonstration

One million people will march to Tahir square Cairo.

In Alexandria large crowds continue to defy curfew and demonstrate in the city center.

The  internet become a trickle and then a void of unprocessed URL’s as Mubarak ordered the internet be “switched off” , slowly as a veil of expectancy falls upon Egypt for what may be a turning point in Egypt’s modern history.

Message to the world

Along with the rhetoric that American leader Barak Obama has clumsily moulded on a day by day basis has been the call to Obama to explain his rendering of foreign nationals, one occasions literally kidnapping, then rendering the captive to Egypt for interrogation purposes.

Hillary Clinton also seized upon the fact that Mubarak has appointed a vice president siting that it was one thing the U.S had been telling Mubarak to do. Fox NEWS continued rotating her sound grab throughout the evening with little or no effect.

A successor to Mubarak has become no clearer…..

ElBaradei continues his appearances with the Egyptian people, but as many analyst express, ElBaradei is not really fully supported by the Egyptian people.  His role may be seen here as more transitional.

Traditionally Egypt has been ruled by leaders from the military. Mubarak himself served in the airforce. The show of force in Cairo with the jets and helicopters was orchestrated by Mubarak supporters in the Egyptian airforce.

There may have been a catalytic effect after the revolution in Tunisia, however the following video shows the highlighted section of Wikileaks Cable 09CAIRO1468 outlining how the U.S had discussed Mubarak’s succession as far back as 2009.

AnonOps Arrests

In Anonymous, WikiLeaks on January 28, 2011 at 3:28 PM

This is a complete farce.

Arresting teenagers for essentially choking a server , with no real damage done  or “hacking” in the sense of any theft or other hollywood embellishments. Teenagers, arrested for exercising basic freedoms in countries who speak of freedom but do most of the killing and maiming.

The arrests are the result from the “Operation Payback” in early December 2010 when Credit Card giants MasterCard, Visa, Swiss Post and PayPal turned their back on Wikileaks as a means of supporters being able to send donations.

Regardless of this action by the misery machines, Julian Assange still posted a nearly half million dollar bail in cash on charges which five months ago were ostensibly dropped.

We Are the New Media

In Egypt, Tunisia, WikiLeaks, World Revolution on January 26, 2011 at 10:11 AM

Videos appeared at an exponential rate through all manner of web sites. The thread was handed from continent to continent, time zone to time zone over 36 hours the Tunisian revolution unfolded heralding a new methodology of internet revolution.

Tunisia – Internet revolution

Over the last three weeks it has become obvious that “the new media” have become the agents for world political change. Never before has an example of how public internet activity could bring down a government. The Tunisian revolution and the subsequent following revolutions in Algeria, Libya and Egypt are the direct result of information sharing and on-line activism. The Tunisian revolution is one of the  first direct results of the Wikileaks U.S Embassy Cablegate being used as  validation for the people of Tunisia and the subsequent over throw of the Ben Ali government.

The internet has been transformed into a minute by minute source that is refered to for world issues over the traditional media outlets.

Unprecedented change has percolated through the Arab nations and the Red Sea geography as never before seen . For the first time an Arab leader was pressured from office by public opinion.

Mainstream media were slow to take up the thread of the Tunisian revolution, and even today have still not reported on some of the incidents, such as the Kasserine massacre.

Bloggers and vloggers from all over the world filled sites with videos taken from mobile phones. Tweets by the second buzzed through optic fibre fuelling a rage which consumed the portals of popular video sites.

Along with this were the Wikileaks U.S Embassy cables which ultimately validated the protesters claims.

The cables from the Tunisian American Embassy showed how the U.S  and the European countries knew about the Ben Ali regimes appalling human rights violations.

Systemic corruption and  bribery  were outlined in the Tunis cables, unrest and the people’s suffering were also conveyed.

However the cable does not offer a possible solution but belies support for the Ben Ali regime as gate-keeper of the economic status quo in the region.

The U.S  and European countries had 100% knowledge of the conditions that the Tunisian people were suffering under, but valued its own economic status quo in the region over the Tunisian people’s rights of self-determination.

The next video shows how Ben Ali made constitutional changes which are now causing consternation amongst the Tunisian people. Ben Ali actively sought to create a vacuum of political opposition, so any  leadership for the Tunisian people is hardly represented. This is the first test that the Tunisian people will have to overcome.

Tunisians want a complete purge of the Ben Ali legacy from their constitutional proceedings. The military have embraced the protesters as have the police.

Like an inland Tsunami the people’s media revolution  spread to Algeria, Egypt and Libya….

In Egypt the 25th January 2011 will be known as “revolution day”

Your plane is waiting Mubarak……..and Hilary…..STFU!!!

Harassed, Detained, and Prevented from Delivering Petition to Bradley Manning

Statement of Events: Bradley Manning’s Primary Visitor Detained at Quantico

Today, activist David House and Jane Hamsher, publisher of firedoglake, were detained, harassed, and ultimately prevented from delivering the petition to Stop the Inhumane Treatment of Bradley Manning.

David House reported from his twitter feed:

  • Detained for 40 minutes now upon entering base. Advised that cannot leave.
  • Meanwhile visiting hours are expiring… Hopeful that I get to see Brad today. These visits are his only reprieve from solitary.
  • I am on approved visitation list; have been visiting since September. Was planning on asking Brad about his conditions today.
  • Vehicle being searched and impounded.
  • I am not being allowed to move on-base to see Bradley. The petition is in my lap in a tow-truck surrounded by MPs. Welcome to Quantico.
  • - MPs still not letting us leave. To clarify I am authorized to be on base; have been on approved visitation list + visiting for 5 months.
  • Quantico Marine brass don’t want Manning to have sole visitor now. Isolation & enforcement of solitary confinement complete.
  • Finally released, right as visiting hours conclude. What’s going on in the brig?

In a development which may cast new light on yesterday’s incidents at Quantico military prison, NBC reports that “U.S. military officials” indicated that Bradley Manning was placed on suicide watch last week by Brig Commander James Averhart, in a violation of procedure.

NBC:

The officials told NBC News, however, that a U.S. Marine commander did violate procedure when he placed Manning on “suicide watch” last week.

Military officials said Brig Commander James Averhart did not have the authority to place Manning on suicide watch for two days last week, and that only medical personnel are allowed to make that call.

The official said that after Manning had allegedly failed to follow orders from his Marine guards. Averhart declared Manning a “suicide risk.” Manning was then placed on suicide watch, which meant he was confined to his cell, stripped of most of his clothing and deprived of his reading glasses — anything that Manning could use to harm himself. At the urging of U.S. Army lawyers, Averhart lifted the suicide watch.

Jane Hamsher and David House were prevented from delivering to the Quantico facility a petition with 42,000 signatures in support of Bradley Manning. Hamsher and House related the incident live via Twitter. Military police detained both at the main entrance to the Quantico facility on the pretext of dealing with formalities arising from an out-of-date auto insurance card. They were not allowed to leave the base until after visiting hours had expired, preventing David House from resuming his customary visits to Bradley Manning in the brig.

As FDL describes, the incident is highly irregular for the Quantico facility, which House has been visiting since September 2010. House’s last tweet about the incident last night expressed a question that was being asked across the web: “What’s going on in the brig?” The news that Manning had been placed on suicide watch provides possible context for the irregular behaviour at Quantico yesterday. Marcy Wheeler notes on her blog that last night’s incident might be explained with reference to the information that Manning had been unjustly treated.

emptywheel:

This certainly puts the events from Quantico yesterday in a different light. According to MSNBC, government lawyers realized last week Manning had been improperly treated. By preventing David House from visiting Manning yesterday, they made sure that he wouldn’t have confirmation of that from Manning directly. But since Jane and David’s comments said they’d be back next week, DOD realized they’d need to ‘fess up themselves.

We are told that the anonymous “military officials” quoted as a source on the article also informed NBC that the U.S. attempt to substantiate a connection between Bradley Manning and Julian Assange has not thus far been fruitful.

NBC:

The officials say that while investigators have determined that Manning had allegedly unlawfully downloaded tens of thousands of documents onto his own computer and passed them to an unauthorized person, there is apparently no evidence he passed the files directly to Assange, or had any direct contact with the controversial WikiLeaks figure.

No indication is given in the article that the untoward treatment of Manning is connected to the reported failure of the U.S. investigation against Julian Assange. Human rights advocates and supporters of Manning will be particularly attentive to the possibility of the coercion of evidence from detainees, given the recent history of judicial decisions to throw out prosecution evidence in cases against Guantanamo detainees, on the basis that it had been obtained through the use of cruel and inhumane treatment, or of torture.

The identities of the “U.S. Marine and Army officials” responsible for the information are not disclosed by NBC.
