Violent Police Arrest Surveillance Video Released in Quebec Court

In Canada, News, Other Leaks, Police Brutality on February 24, 2013 at 8:47 AM

Video footage showing the forceful arrest of a man suspected of robbery in Trois-Rivières, Que., has been released.

The clip, captured by a surveillance video, shows 19-year-old Alexis Vadeboncoeur lying face down in the snow, with his arms outstretched as four Trois-Rivières municipal police officers approach.

It shows him being kicked and punched by officers as he lies on the ground, surrendering.

According to Vadeboncoeur’s lawyer, René Duval, his client posed no threat to police before the altercation.

Duval said Vadeboncoeur yelled “I’m 19, I have no criminal record. This is a fake gun and I’m surrendering,” before police got to him.

Duval, said his client sustained several injuries during the altercation.

“What the video doesn’t show is all the bruises that he suffered at the hands of police, especially in his testicles. Because he was repeatedly kicked in his testicles,” he said.

The footage was released on Thursday following Vadeboncoeur’s bail hearing at the Trois-Rivières courthouse .

The incident began when police were called to a suspected robbery at a pharmacy on Des Récollets Boulevard on Feb. 2.

They chased a suspect, who was hooded and armed, to a parking lot near the Trois-Rivières Cégep, where the surveillance footage was captured.

Vadeboncoeur can be seen tossing his firearm away from him as he surrenders and lies down on his stomach in the parking lot.

In their police report, officers said the teen had broken into a business. They reported they had to use force because their lives were in danger.

Quebec provincial police Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado said the force’s internal affairs division is investigating.

Vadeboncoeur will remain behind bars until his bail hearing resumes in March.

500-Year-Old Machiavelli Arrest Proclamation Discovered in Italy

In Italy, News, Other Leaks, Politics on February 18, 2013 at 4:07 AM

A British academic has unearthed a 500-year-old proclamation calling for the arrest of the Renaissance political writer Niccolo Machiavelli.

The Medici family, who ruled Florence at the time, accused Machiavelli of plotting to overthrow them.

Professor Stephen Milner from the University of Manchester found the 1513 document buried in the state archives in the Italian city of Florence.

The proclamation led to the downfall of Machiavelli, known as the ‘Italian Prince of Darkness’.

“They sent out this proclamation through the streets of Florence that was issued by the city’s town crier asking for people to hand over information to the police force within the hour,” Professor Milner told the BBC.

“There was some urgency about his capture.

“He seems to have been public enemy number one in Florence at that particular moment.”

On the same day as the proclamation was released, Machiavelli was detained, tortured and placed under house arrest.

There he started writing his famous book The Prince, describing the art of political manipulation.

“The Prince was written in the vain hope of gaining favour and employment with the Medici – but there’s no evidence to suggest they even read it,” Professor Milner added in a statement.

“The Prince is a seminal work, with a lasting influence on political thought and culture.

“The term Machiavellian and the naming of the Devil as ‘Old Nick’ all derive from this single work.”

Machiavelli died in poverty 14 years after his arrest.

NYPD Arrest Occupy Activists, Claim to Find Cache of Weapons & Bomb-Making Materials

In News, Occupy Wall Street, USA, USA, World Revolution on January 1, 2013 at 1:46 AM

New York City police claim they found bomb-making materials and a ‘Terrorist Encyclopedia’ at the Greenwich Village home of a young Harvard graduate and his 9-month pregnant girlfriend.

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and boyfriend Aaron Greene, 31, were arrested on a weapons-possession charge after police officers say they found the dangerous materials in the couple’s apartment, the New York Post reported. The officers claim they found 7 grams of HMTD, a highly explosive white powder, as well as an instructional stack of papers titled “The Terrorist Encyclopedia”.

Police claim that they also discovered a flare launcher that replicates a grenade launcher, a modified 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun, ammunition, and nine high-capacity rifle magazines, unnamed sources told the Post.

The officers obtained a search warrant to enter the apartment stemming from a case of credit card-theft, which Gliedman was allegedly wanted for.

The suspects come from privileged backgrounds that are unusual for suspected terrorists. Gliedman is the daughter of the well-respected Dr. Paul Gliedman, director of radiation oncology at the Beth Israel Hospital, Brooklyn Division, and Susyan Schops Gliedman, a realtor. In 2011, the young woman’s father was listed as one of America’s top doctors in New York Magazine.

Greene received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Harvard University and was an Occupy Wall Street activist.

Gliedman and Greene live together in an apartment in Greenwich Village and are expecting a baby. A neighbor who resides in the apartment at 8 West 9thStreet told the Gothamist that they are “hippie types”. The unnamed man said Gliedman is “very friendly, very nice”, whereas Greene is “kind of cold, not the type of person who encouraged politeness.”

Some have begun to question the events of the strange arrest, which were surprising considering the couple’s background. The Post reported the claims made by the New York Police Department, but did not report the defendant’s case.

“The case really does have all the makings of a tabloid reporter’s dream: a super-privileged mom-to-be, living in one of the cushiest neighborhoods in Manhattan, apparently devising bombs with her OWS boyfriend,” writes Alexander Abad-Santos for The Atlantic. “ What Gliedman and Greene were allegedly up to, of course, would be pretty terrifying no matter what neighborhood they were doing it in.”

Authorities allege that Greene has had five run-ins with the police and was previously charged with assault and weapons possession.

Now, the Harvard grad will likely become the father of a newborn while imprisoned. Greene was arraigned Sunday and is being held without bail until his Jan. 4 hearing. Gliedman’s arraignment has been delayed while she is in labor. She is currently in the hospital.

“The whole situation’s sad,” attorney Lisa Pelosi, who is representing Greene, told the Associated Press. She declined to comment about the case any further, leaving the details on the defendant’s side unknown until the case progresses.

Dramatic video footage emerges of one of China’s top dissidents breaking through a security cordon to reach the wife of jailed Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo, who is herself under house arrest.

Liu Xia has been under house arrest in her Beijing apartment since her husband was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 and subsequently arrested.

Over the past two years she’s reportedly only been able to visit her parents and her husband in jail; she’s had no contact with the outside world.

It’s believed her husband Liu Xiaobo irritated the Chinese government as a writer and human rights activist, openly calling for an end to communist party rule.

Michael Moore’s Bodyguard Arrested on Airport Gun Charge

FOX News:

Filmmaker Michael Moore’s bodyguard was arrested for carrying an unlicensed weapon in New York’s JFK airport Wednesday night.

Police took Patrick Burke, who says Moore employs him, into custody after he declared he was carrying a firearm at a ticket counter. Burke is licensed to carry a firearm in Florida and California, but not in New York. Burke was taken to Queens central booking and could potentially be charged with a felony for the incident.

Moore’s 2003 Oscar-winning film “Bowling for Columbine” criticizes what Moore calls America’s “culture of fear” and its obsession with guns.
